WVU Dental periodontist earns specialty board certification

Congratulations to new faculty member Dr. Andrea Pizzini

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Andrea Pizzini, DDS, MS, a periodontist who  joined the West Virginia University School of Dentistry and WVU Dental in August, is one of a limited number of board-certified periodontists in the state.

Dr. Pizzini became a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in October following the successful completion of qualifying and oral exams that, according to the ABP, cover all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment including dental implants.

“This is the final step in the board certification process, and Dr. Pizzini is now board certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery. This is a major personal achievement for Dr. Pizzini and aligns perfectly with the mission of our department to have its faculty board certified. We are proud to congratulate him on this remarkable feat,” said Arif Salman, BDS, MDS, MDSc, interim chair and graduate program director for the dental school’s periodontics department.

Dr. Pizzini came to West Virginia from Spokane, Washington where he most recently worked in private practice. He completed his  advanced dental implant degree and doctorate degree in 2015 from Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio in Madrid, Spain. In 2020 he completed a postgraduate residency in periodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

“One of the reasons I decided become a periodontist is the ability to grow back tissue that disease has destroyed. Periodontal regeneration allows us to replace missing gum and bone support around teeth and to establish a healthy environment for patient to retain their teeth in health and function,” Pizzini said.

As an addition to the School of Dentistry family, Dr. Pizzini provides patient care and is a faculty member in the WVU dental school’s postgraduate periodontics and dental implant program.  Pizzini is part of a program implementing unique robotic-assisted technology to improve dental implant outcomes.

Patients who are considering periodontal and dental implant treatment can learn more about the clinic online or call 304-293-5831.
