Dental school faculty provide American Dental Association with a COVID-19 review

Focus on wellness and well-being of students during pandemic

The American Dental Association launched a JADA+ COVID-19 monograph, a digital collection of stories, reflections and accounts of what it was like for oral health professionals working through a pandemic.

Dr. Valerie Perrine, associate dean for student affairs, community health and outreach, along with Dr. Foti Panagakos, associate dean for research and postdoctoral affairs, from the West Virginia University School of Dentistry submitted the article Impact of COVID-19 at WVU School of Dentistry.

To gauge student well-being while navigating their professional program during a pandemic, Perrine and Panagakos developed a 19-question anonymous survey open to dental, dental hygiene and post-graduate students. The goal was to identify student community status and areas of difficulty. Having the survey results available during the spring semester of 2021 allowed the school's administration and wellness committee to focus on critical areas of student wellness, marshaling the support of our Health Sciences Center and campus mental health resources.
