Two teams of WVU School of Nursing faculty and staff recently participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay to promote teamwork, health, and well-being.
The marathon relay, held May 4 in downtown Pittsburgh, was divided into five legs of varying distances. Together, each team member in the relay contributed to running a full-length marathon.
“Our nursing programs are guided by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials standards. Domain 10 of the standards pertains to personal development, encompassing the promotion of nurses' well-being,” said Dr. Tina Antill Keener, Director of Bachelor Science in Nursing Programs.
“A group of faculty serving on a Domain 10 Task Force decided that forming marathon relay teams may help individuals commit to their health, contribute to their overall well-being, and model a healthy lifestyle.”
In addition to Antill Keener, School of Nursing participants included Dr. Brad Phillips, Dr. Roger Carpenter, Dr. Diana Niland, Beth Minchau, Gina Greathouse, Wendy Holdren, Karis Wolfe, and Devon Neptune.
“It was so much fun to see WVU faculty and staff come together and train for the event. We had a variety of running levels,” Antill Keener said. “It was awesome to see people who had never run or participated in a marathon before commit to the process and make such great progress. We frequently shared our running schedules, mileage, and apps we used. Several of us have decided to participate in the half-marathon next year. That is evidence of success!”
