WVU Cancer Institute Annual Meeting and Hardesty Lecture

The WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) is sponsoring the second Annual WVUCI Scientific Meeting on Nov. 22, 2019, at the Erickson Alumni Center. This is a half-day event with scientific sessions that include outside speakers, as well as reports from selected WVUCI faculty members highlighting their basic, clinical and population research.

The meeting is open to all WVU and NIOSH faculty, employees, students and trainees with an interest in cancer research and cancer care. The outside speakers this year are: Jaime Studts, Ph.D., an expert in behavioral and community-based research; and Elizabeth Sharlow, Ph.D., who focuses on exploiting chemical biology approaches to understanding critical signaling pathways in tumor cell viability.

At 4 p.m., Dr. Otis Brawley will give the Hardesty Lecture on “Cancer Control in the 21st Century” in the Grand Hall of the Erickson Alumni Center. Dr. Brawley is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Brawley is a global leader in cancer research and health disparities and a leading voice in training the next generation of scientists and physicians.

In addition, an important part of the meeting will be a trainee poster session designed to highlight all types of cancer research conducted at WVU. The poster session held between 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in Salon C of the Erickson Alumni Center. Trainees from across all HSC Schools, Departments, graduate programs and laboratories are invited to present their work at this session. Posters will be competitively judged, with monetary prizes awarded to winners in three categories- Clinical, Population Sciences, and Laboratory-based Research.

Registration is open for the poster session. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 18, 2019. (Additional information will be provided to participants following the close of registration.)

University community invited to on-campus presentation by National Institutes of Health director

West Virginia University will host Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, director of the National Institutes of Health, on Wednesday (March 27) on the Health Sciences Campus in Morgantown for a presentation at 3 p.m. in Fukushima Auditorium (HSC-North 1901). The event is open to WVU students, faculty and staff. Attendees are asked to register in advance, bring their WVU ID and arrive early to help manage space needs.

WVU Cancer Institute making investments in cancer care, research with $50M commitment from State

The WVU Cancer Institute continues to work toward National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation as it begins making investments in cancer care and research utilizing the $50 million commitment from the State of West Virginia announced last summer.

HPML faculty to co-chair community of practice for American Society of Clinical Oncology

Dr. Nicole Stout, research assistant professor with Health Policy, Management and Leadership and WVU Cancer Institute Cancer Prevention and Control was selected to co-chair the new American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Survivorship Community of Practice. The community of practice will lead multidisciplinary collaborations in education, research and policy to advance initiatives for cancer survivorship.
