Powley honored for achievement with alumni association

Recipient began dental school career in 1979

Marilyn Powley is the 2019 recipient of the West Virginia University School of Dentistry Alumni Association Alumni Achievement Award.

The award is in honor of her extraordinary skills that allow the association to prosper and her dedication to students.

Marilyn began a career at the School of Dentistry in 1979 as an Administrative Secretary in the Department of Orthodontics under Dr. William Merow, Chairman. 

In 1983, she took a year off to spend time with her son Erik.

In 1984, she returned to work as a supervisor with University Health Associates under Susan Skidmore, Director, Billing/Dental Insurance.

Between 1985 -1996 Marilyn held the position of Program Specialist of Postdoctoral Affairs under Dr. James Overberger, Associate Dean, and from 1996-2000 was moved with the Postdoctoral Programs, which was transferred to Dr. William McCutcheon, Associate Dean, Academics and Student Affairs. She then worked for several months under Dr. Sheila Price after Dr. McCutcheon stepped down.

From 2000-2007 she held the position of Program Specialist in the Department of Endodontics under Dr. Russell Jackson, Chairman

In 2007, due to revamping of positions within the school, she was relocated as Program Specialist, to the Department of Dental Hygiene under Ms. Amy Funk, Director

In 2009, Marilyn transferred into the position of Administrative Assistant in the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs under Dr. Robert Wanker, Assistant Dean.

In January 2015, Marilyn retired from the School of Dentistry after 33 years.

In October 2017, Marilyn decided to come out of retirement and return to the school as the administrative secretary under Dr. Michael Meador, Associate Dean, Clinical Affairs. With this being a temporary position, she then returned in October 2018 to present as the Administrative Assistant for Dr. Robert Wanker, Assistant Dean, Student and Alumni Affairs.

In addition to working full-time for the School of Dentistry, Marilyn also held a position with the Academy of Dental Materials were she worked as Secretary to Dr. James Overberger, Treasurer, of Academy of Dental Materials.

Specifically for the WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association, Marilyn began work with Cathy Boyce, Secretary-Treasurer, in 1999. She assists Cathy with reunions and picnics and then was brought on board as Executive Secretary in 2009.

Marilyn was elected to serve on the board as Secretary-Treasurer in April 2016, 2017 and 2018. She manages the membership dues, minutes at meetings and assists Cathy Boyce with events.
