Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist provides specialized imaging services for complex oral and dental cases

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The addition of Lakshmi Garladinne, BDS, MS, MSD, an oral and maxillofacial radiologist, to the West Virginia University School of Dentistry Department of Diagnostic Sciences completes a trio of core diagnostic specialties in the department including oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine.

Dr. Garladinne, the only board certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist in the state, completed a residency and earned a master of dental science from University of Connecticut Health Center in 2012.

Oral and maxillofacial radiologists are described as dentistry’s imaging specialists.

“Dr. Garladinne has the training and expertise to educate our students at the highest level. Furthermore, as the utilization of cone beam CT scan imaging becomes more prevalent, she can provide services to dental professionals both within the dental school and throughout West Virginia and the region. WVU is very fortunate to have someone of her caliber,” Dr. Bryan Whitaker, interim chair of the diagnostic sciences department, said.

Oral and maxillofacial radiologists produce and interpret images and data used to diagnose and manage diseases, disorders and conditions in the oral and maxillofacial region. In addition, Dr. Garladinne will be able to provide guidance for surgical procedures such as the placement of dental implants and other prostheses.

The Department of Diagnostic Sciences at WVU Dental provides unique services and education in the specialties of oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial radiology.

Procedures offered include imaging and special testing for maxillofacial diseases, biopsy services, exams, diagnosis and management of complex medical conditions affecting oral health. Providers can also offer education in oral cancer prevention, detection and awareness. Patients who suffer from inflammatory and ulcerative disorders can also be managed by the diagnostic sciences department.
