Mountaineer Trivia by Dr. Robert Hornbrook

Learn who opened the doors to the school and more.

The first three Deans of the WVU School of Dentistry all came from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland. In order, they were Dr. J. Ben Robinson, Kenneth V. Randolph and W. Robert Biddington. The first native West Virginian and dental graduate of the WVU School of Dentistry to serve as Dean was Interim Dean, Dr. Robert H. Hornbrook.

Many dental schools in the U.S. are located in larger metropolitan areas and are not located on the main campus of their respective Universities. The WVU School of Dentistry is located on the Health Sciences Center campus of West Virginia University which is just a few miles from the downtown campus. This allows dental and dental hygiene students to take part in local community and university experiences such as arts, culture, food, music, nightlife and sports.

WVU sports are very popular with students, the community and the entire State of West Virginia. Football weekends with tailgating, and basketball games are particularly popular to attend. WVU is a member of the Big 12, Power 5 Conference and plays top teams in the country each year. As this was written, the first football game is 134 days away against Florida State in Atlanta! Be sure to check the schedules for all the games and plan to attend.

One of the favorite traditions is for all Mountaineer fans, and the players as well, to jointly sing “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after football and basketball victories and all sports victories, so be sure to learn the words!

WVU's mascot is a Mountaineer and is present at all football and basketball games.
