MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Meghan Bastin, DMD, MPH, who joined the West Virginia University School of Dentistry and WVU Dental clinics in 2022, is now the third faculty member and provider in the pediatric dentistry department to earn board certification.
The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) certifies pediatric dentists through a dual-exam process that takes a minimum of two years. Being board-certified allows ABPD to “systematically verify and validate the education, training and licensure of each candidate.”
Among the many areas of pediatric dentistry, Dr. Bastin’s focuses include patient education and public health, didactic and clinic education, minimally invasive techniques and anesthesiology.
“One of the reasons I got into academia, specifically at WVU, was to be able to address problems like access to care. I feel my colleagues here are open minded and hard-working and look for solutions, not only by talking about them, but acting on them,” Bastin said.
Her current research focuses on healthcare shortages in Appalachia.
Dr. Bastin earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015. She began her oral healthcare career as a dental hygienist and has experience as an oral surgery assistant.
In 2016, Bastin completed an advanced education program in general dentistry at NYU Langone in Ohio. In 2019, she completed an advanced education program in pediatric dentistry at St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Jersey.
Dr. Bastin spent several years in private practice in northwestern Pennsylvania.
She treats children and individuals with developmental and behavioral challenges through WVU Dental at the WVU School of Dentistry and WVU Medicine Children’s hospital.
WVU Dental is the clinical practice component of WVU School of Dentistry.
