Perry G. Fine, M.D. Pain Lecture Series to be held at WVU Health Sciences Center

The Ninth Annual Perry G. Fine, M.D. Pain Lecture Series will be held on Monday, October, 3, 2016, at the WVU Health Sciences Center, Okey Patteson Auditorium in Morgantown, West Virginia.

The lecture series will address a critical topic for end-of-life care entitled, “The Pain Management Conundrum: New Horizons and Current Risks of Under and Over Treatment – The Pharmacotherapy Pipeline for Acute Pain”. This continuing education lecture series will inform medical professionals about pharmcotherapeutic options with better risk profiles than NSAIDS and opioids. In addition, participants will learn how to mitigate risks associated with prescribing opioids for chronic pain conditions that are refractory to non-opioid therapies. Then participants will watch the new PBS documentary, The Painful Truth, based on the award winning book by Dr. Lynn Webster and join the panel discussion.

Presenters include:

  • Lynn R. Webster, M. D., F.A.C.P.M, F.A.S.A.M., is a leading pain physician, researcher and author with a focus on the management of complex pain problems. Dr. Webster is vice president of Scientific Affairs for PRA, a leading clinical research organization that operates in more than 80 countries. 
  • Perry G. Fine, M.D., professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah’s Pain Research Center and School of Medicine. He also serves as strategic advisor for Capital Caring in Washington, D.C.;
  • Malene Smith Davis, M.B.A., M.S.N., C.H.P.N., Chief Executive Officer of Capital Caring and Founding President for Hospice Care Corporation. She also serves as a member of the WVU Alumni Association Board of Directors. 

The series is hosted by Hospice Care Corporation and the WVU Health Sciences Office of Continuing Education. This event is free to the public and provides continuing education units for physicians, nurses, social workers, healthcare providers and students. The event also provides an opportunity for networking among healthcare professionals from around the region. Registration and refreshments will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome and opening remarks at 5:00 p.m.
