MEET OUR GRADS: Dr. Amer Shammaa

Dr. Shammaa is ready to create healthy smiles.

What was the best part of your experience in the orthodontics graduate program?

It is really hard to specify one thing about the West Virginia University orthodontics program. It was a great experience from the education to the clinical experience and being trained under the best orthodontists in the country. This was one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. I really enjoy doing what I always wanted to do by creating a healthy smile and having a major impact on lives.

Why did you choose WVU and why would you encourage others to pursue an opportunity with the School of Dentistry?

My oldest brother, who is also an orthodontist, did his orthodontic residency at WVU. I joined him at a continuing education course at WVU where I met Dr. Peter Ngan (department chair) and visited the orthodontic department and clinics. Since that, time my goal was to be in this program and I worked hard to be accepted. I definitely encourage dentists that are looking for an orthodontic residency to apply here at WVU. I believe they will enjoy the experience same way I did.

Where do you hope your advanced education in orthodontics will take you?

My end in mind is to change peoples’ lives by creating a healthy smile that will make them happier and confident. After finishing my three years of intensive training here at WVU, I believe that I am well prepared and ready to have my own path as an orthodontist.

What would you tell yourself on the first day of your graduate studies?

I would tell my first-year self, “Dr. Amer Shammaa you finally did it.  It has been a long way and you worked so hard the past years and now this is your time to do what you always wanted to do - enjoy making smiles.
