  1. Step One: Qualifications

    • Must have passed the National Dental Board Examination - Part I.

    • Must have earned a DMD/DDS degree or its equivalent.

    • Must be eligible for a West Virginia dental license or an intern/resident permit.

    • Advanced Dental Admission Test (ADAT) is recommended but not required.

    • Must be proficient in the English language or provide a recent TOEFL score (if you are a foreign applicant).

    • Must display evidence of scholastic and clinical achievement that would indicate the applicant’s ability to progress in a program of this nature. Generally, a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 is required.

    • Must have applied only to schools participating in the Match program. Students applying to other programs will not be accepted (see Step 2).

  2. Step 2: Apply to the Postdoctoral Application Support Service Program (PASS):

    The Master of Science program in Orthodontics at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry participates in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service Program (PASS).

    Please visit http://programpages.passweb.org/search to view the application requirements.

    Applicants must also obtain a match number from National Matching Services and sign a form indicating that they are not applying to a nonmatched program. 


    The deadline for submission of all application materials to PASS is September 15, 2017.

  3. Step 3: Interview

    Once your application and supporting materials are processed in PASS and received by the School, they will be reviewed by the Orthodontic Graduate Program Selection Committee.     While an invitation to appear for an interview should not be construed as evidence of acceptance, it is a requirement that assists the committee in its selection process. All applicants receiving an interview are required to submit a West Virginia University Graduate Program Application along with the $60 application fee.

  4. Step 4: Acceptance

    Applicants approved for admission to the program will be notified through MATCH on or after December 1.

    All residents will be subject to a criminal background check, by fingerprinting or the most recent technology available. The resident may not begin their training program beyond the orientation phase until the criminal background check has been submitted.

    Become familiar with the West Virginia University School of Dentistry’s policy and procedure for Bloodborne Pathogens and Infectious Diseases.

    Must consent to and pass a criminal background investigation prior to final acceptance.

    Must submit documentation of required immunizations including of vaccination for rubella, rubeola, mumps, hepatitis B, tetanus, meningococcal, meningitis, varicella and polio. As well as provide evidence of a negative PPD test performed with 12 months. A positive PPD test result must be accompanied by an appropriate chest x-ray report and follow-up treatment plan.

    Must meet certain Federal and University standards regarding the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). To comply with these standards, all individuals admitted to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and dental graduate programs must successfully complete the Biomedical Responsible Conduct of Research (BRCR) online course offered by the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). The BRCR course must be completed no later than 30 days after beginning your first semester in the education program. Failure to satisfy this requirement within the specified period of time will impact your enrollment.
