The Project

Since the results of our last project indicated that cavities in young children in West Virginia were so much worse than their peers in the rest of the nation, we decided to focus our new research efforts on the early detection of cavities in children.  In particular, we are interested in determining whether high cavity rates of the mother will affect the cavity risk of the new born baby.  The NIH and the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research agreed that this was an important project and have funded us in a new 5 year study.  Our goal is to recruit and follow 500 pregnant women and their babies throughout West Virginia.  We would follow these mothers and their babies until the children are about 2 years old.
