Once we begin, the first thing we most commonly do is place separators, or seps, and we often place them after the consultation.
They are small rubber rings that are placed between specific teeth to create space for bands to be placed.
This procedure only takes a few minutes and patients will return in 1-2 weeks to have their braces placed.
Patients may experience some discomfort with the separators that may last 2-3 days. Tylenol or other over-the-counter pain relievers are adequate to control the discomfort. DO NOT EXCEED RECOMMENDED DOSAGES. Patients are instructed to avoid flossing the teeth with the separators, and, of course, avoid sticky, chewy foods that may dislodge the separators.
If you lose a separator, please call the clinic as soon as possible (304) 293-5217.
