West Virginia Developed a State Oral Health Plan that came effective March 2010 under the leadership of Governor Joe Manchin III. The plan outlines the burden of oral disease and delineates objectives and strategies for improving oral health in our state.

The West Virginia Dental and Dental Hygiene Workforce Surveys were administered in January 2012 through the West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners (WVBDE) in cooperation with the West Virginia University School of Dentistry and the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, Oral Health Program. These optional surveys were sent out to all dentists and hygienists licensed by the WVBDE to be completed and returned with their re-licensure application.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) collects and publishes data on certain aspects of the status of oral health in West Virginia as well as all states in the United States through the National Oral Health Surveillance System. Some of the oral health indicators for which data is tracked are: dental visits, teeth cleaning, complete tooth loss, loss of 6 or more teeth, fluoridation status, caries experience, untreated tooth decay, dental sealants, and cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx.

WVDHHR Oral Health Curriculum Available for Headstart/Pre-K, K-5, and grades 6-12.
West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WVDHHR) Oral Health Program has created a NEW comprehensive oral health curriculum.
The curriculum was created in modules for HeadStart/Pre-K, K-5 and grades 6-12. These lessons/activities can be used by any teacher or health professional to present in a classroom.
A West Virginia State Oral Health Coalition exists which provides for a structured approach to meeting the oral health care needs of the citizens of West Virginia. It is open to all including representatives of the government, oral health care professionals, civic organizations, professional school faculty, staff, and students, minorities, consumer advocates, etc.
